The (oddly) spring-like temperatures we enjoyed last weekend can make us forget that it’s winter! With winter comes freezing temperatures, and with freezing temperatures come busted pipes. Find out how to protect your pipes and prevent costly damage!
How To Protect Your Pipes:
  1. Keep your thermostat temperature consistent. If you turn it down at night, you could risk freezing (and bursting) pipes.
  2. Keep your garage door(s) closed. This will prevent exposing water supply lines to freezing temperatures.
  3. Allow warmer air to circulate the plumbing by opening kitchen and bathroom doors.
  4. Let cold water drip from the faucet when the temperature is freezing or below. Running water through the pipes helps prevent them from freezing. Just a slow trickle will do.
  5. If you are going on an extended trip away from your home, leave the heat on (set no lower than 55° F).
  6. Add insulation to attics and crawl spaces to maintain higher temperatures in these areas.
  7. If there is a remodel in your home’s near future, consider relocating exposed pipes. This will increase the protection from freezing.
